Blur a screenshot: hide names and numbers
Before a screenshot goes into a chat, an email or onto the web, names, addresses, phone numbers or codes often need to go. With Screenshot 42 you simply paint over them with the brush, on Windows and Mac.
- 1 · select an areaStart a capture and drag the frame over the spot.
- 2 · pick a brushThe drop blurs, the chequered pattern pixelates.
- 3 · paint over itYou set the brush width with the slider.
- 4 · EnterThe image is finished, and the spots stay unreadable in the copied image too.
Your phone number stays your phone number.
Blur or pixelate?
Both brushes make the spot unreadable; they just look different.
- Blur: everything underneath is coarsely pixelated and softened as well. It looks calm and hardly stands out in the image.
- Pixelate: small squares appear under the stroke, each in the average colour of that spot. The tiles sit on a fixed grid, so several strokes fit together neatly.
What matters when pixelating and redacting
Whether you black out, pixelate or blur: what matters is that the spot is really gone in the finished image. With Screenshot 42 the image is only created when you copy or save it, and the painted-over spot is burned into the image. Text recognition can't read anything there either.
- Paint over the whole name or the whole number, not just part of it.
- Scannable codes count too, for example on tickets or invoices.
- Missed a bit? You can click the brush stroke, move it, duplicate it with Ctrl + D and delete it with Del. Ctrl + Z undoes it.
Then pass it on
Enter puts the image on the clipboard, and Ctrl + V pastes it into the chat, the email or the document. Or one click on your folder saves it as a PNG file instead. You can add circles, arrows and text before that.
