Edit a screenshot: arrow, circle and text, all editable
Circle what matters, add an arrow and a few words, highlight a spot with the highlighter: with Screenshot 42 you edit the screenshot right where you selected it, on Windows 11 and Mac. No second program opens, and until you press Enter, everything can still be changed.
- 1 · select an areaStart a capture and drag the frame. The toolbar appears below it.
- 2 · tool and colourArrow, circle, text or highlighter, plus one of six colours.
- 3 · drawDrag right in the image. The tool stays selected for the next capture.
- 4 · change, then EnterGrab, move, make bigger. Only Enter finishes the image.
An arrow, a circle, and the masterpiece is done.
All the tools in the toolbar
| Tool | What it does |
|---|---|
| Arrow | Points at something. The tip is where you let go. |
| Line | A straight line, for underlining for example. |
| Rectangle | A frame around a spot. Hold Shift for a square. |
| Oval | For circling. Hold Shift for a perfect circle. |
| Freehand | Draw freely with the mouse. |
| Highlighter | Mark a spot translucently, just like on paper. |
| Blur, Pixelate | Brushes for names, addresses and numbers, see Blur a screenshot. |
| text | Click and type. Enter finishes, Shift + Enter starts a new line, a double click edits existing text. |
Plus six colours (turquoise, red, gold, green, white, black) and a line width slider that sets the font size for text. Tool, colour and width are kept for the next capture.
Changing drawings afterwards
- Grab and move: click a drawn object and drag it. Use the handles to change its size.
- Colour and width: when an object is selected, colour and slider change exactly that object.
- Duplicate: Ctrl + D or right-click and “Duplicate”. The copy sits slightly offset next to it.
- Delete and undo: Del deletes the selected object, Ctrl + Z undoes the last step, Ctrl + Y redoes it.
The same applies on the Mac, where Ctrl is ⌘.
Cropping and precise selection
“Crop” in the toolbar changes the edges of the image, even after you have drawn. Whatever is cut off is kept until you copy and can be brought back by dragging the edge out again. For a precise frame, the magnifier helps (key L): it shows every pixel enlarged while you drag. Hold the space bar to move the whole selection.
Done: copy or save
Only when you press Enter is the image created, with everything you have drawn. It is then on the clipboard, and Ctrl + V pastes it into the chat, the email or the document, see Paste a screenshot into a chat. Or one click on your folder saves it as a PNG instead.
